For James, teaching isn't simply about passing on techniques. It's about seeing people develop.

Schools of Kung Fu Brighton is one of 12 schools within the Schools of Kung Fu organisation. Each local school is independently focused on serving its community while following the same syllabus, teaching standards and instructor development programme. This means Brighton has its own local identity and Head Instructor while also benefiting from the knowledge, experience and support of the wider organisation.

The Heart of the Schools of Kung Fu Organisation

Schools of Kung Fu UK Headquarters

Schools of Kung Fu Brighton may be a local martial arts school, but behind it sits an established national organisation with its own dedicated UK Headquarters. Based in South Croydon, Schools of Kung Fu HQ was established by Sifu Alan Paterson in 2005 and has grown into one of the largest and most established schools within the organisation.

Unlike a martial arts club that hires a hall for a few hours each week, the Croydon Headquarters is a dedicated full-time martial arts school operating seven days a week. With two training rooms, a large instructor team and classes for children and adults at different levels of experience, martial arts education takes place there throughout the week. But its importance extends far beyond the students who train in Croydon.

The UK Hub for Schools of Kung Fu

Croydon serves as the national hub for Schools of Kung Fu in the United Kingdom. It is where much of the organisation’s instructor development, leadership training, technical development and national planning comes together.

National and senior instructors from across Schools of Kung Fu meet at Headquarters on a regular basis, providing an opportunity to train together, exchange knowledge, review development and maintain the standards expected throughout the organisation. This means the people responsible for leading Schools of Kung Fu don’t operate independently of one another — they come together, train together, share experience and discuss how the organisation can continue improving. That knowledge is then taken back into the individual schools and passed on to local instructor teams and students.

A Full-Time Professional Martial Arts Environment

Having a permanent Headquarters also gives Schools of Kung Fu something extremely valuable: a professional environment dedicated entirely to martial arts. Classes take place seven days a week, with programmes covering children, adult beginners and more experienced students. The Headquarters also provides an environment where instructors can continue learning how to teach, lead classes and develop students effectively.

For newer Head Instructors such as James Briggs, this wider infrastructure means there is always an established organisation and experienced instructor network behind the local school. James isn’t expected to develop Schools of Kung Fu Brighton alone — he has access to the experience, knowledge and support that have been developed throughout Schools of Kung Fu over many years.

Where Our Instructors Come Together

One of the most important roles of Headquarters is bringing people together. Schools of Kung Fu has instructors operating in different communities around the UK, but maintaining consistency requires communication and continual development. National instructors meet at Headquarters regularly, helping ensure that knowledge isn’t isolated within individual schools.

These meetings and training opportunities allow senior instructors to share experiences from their own schools, discuss instructor and student development, work together technically and help shape the future direction of Schools of Kung Fu.

That creates something much stronger than a collection of individual martial arts clubs. It creates an organisation.

Led by Sifu Alan Paterson

Schools of Kung Fu UK Headquarters is led by Sifu Alan Paterson, UK Chief Instructor. Sifu Alan has developed the Croydon school since 2005 while continuing his own martial arts journey under the guidance of Sifu Sergio Pascal Iadarola.

Today, he oversees the wider Schools of Kung Fu organisation in the UK while remaining actively involved in teaching, instructor development, gradings, seminars and the continued development of the organisation. His role at Headquarters provides a central point of leadership connecting local Head Instructors, National Instructors and the international guidance provided through Sifu Sergio and the Eternal Spring Institute.

What Does This Mean for a Student in Brighton?

For someone considering joining Schools of Kung Fu Brighton, the important question isn’t how large our organisation is. It’s what that structure means for you or your child.

It means your Head Instructor has people he can turn to for guidance. It means James continues developing rather than being left to teach in isolation. It means instructors from across the organisation regularly share knowledge and experience. It means there is an established syllabus and instructor-development pathway behind your local classes. And it means Schools of Kung Fu Brighton benefits from an organisation that has been developing students, instructors and schools for more than twenty years.

Your relationship will always be with James and the Brighton instructor team. But behind them is something much bigger.

A full-time UK Headquarters

Senior instructors who regularly train and develop together

A national instructor network

International guidance through the Eternal Spring Institute

And a shared commitment to continually improving the standard of martial arts education we provide.

Schools of Kung Fu Brighton has been created to become part of the local Brighton & Hove community. But it doesn’t begin its journey alone. It benefits from more than two decades of experience developed through Schools of Kung Fu UK, the leadership of SiFu Alan Paterson, the support of National Instructor SiFu Kul Rai and the international guidance of SiFu Sergio Pascal Iadarola.

That structure allows James and his team to concentrate on what matters most: providing every child and adult who walks through the doors of Schools of Kung Fu Brighton with professional instruction, a welcoming environment and the opportunity to enjoy a lifelong journey in martial arts.
